MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 1, 2022 03:44 PM
From: Representative Craig T. Staats
To: All House members
Subject: Notice of VA Burial Benefits for Veterans (Former HB 164)

In the near future, I intend to re-introduce legislation that will require licensed funeral directors, funeral entities or cemetery companies to notify the county veterans affairs director of a deceased serviceperson having legal residence in the county and to notify the decedent’s family with the contact information for the county veterans affairs director.

As I explained in a previous memo, I am introducing this legislation due to families being unaware of the benefits available to them at the time of planning a loved one’s funeral. Furthermore, in some circumstances incorrect or misleading information is given to veterans regarding the availability of burial benefits.

My legislation will assist the families of our deceased service personnel during their most difficult times by connecting to the county director, who will be able to guide them through any available benefits for deceased servicepersons and their families.

We owe it to our veterans, who have earned their benefits, to ensure that correct and timely information regarding burial benefits can be provided.

I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this legislation.
