MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 28, 2022 10:36 AM
From: Representative Tim Twardzik
To: All House members
Subject: Repeal of the obsolete Anthracite Coal Tax Statute (Act 225 of 1921)

Please join me as a co-sponsor of legislation to repeal Act 225 of 1921, which imposed a tax on anthracite coal prepared for market in this Commonwealth.

Under this statute, the Commonwealth imposed a tax of 1.5% on the value of on each ton of anthracite coal that was mined, washed, and screened or otherwise prepared for market in this Commonwealth.  The tax was imposed for a limited time, which ended on May 31, 1931. Thus, even though no tax has been applied under this act for more than 90 years, it remains on the books.

Repealing obsolete tax laws simplifies our statutes and reduces taxpayers’ confusion about the business climate in this Commonwealth.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
