Subject: Simplifying the administration of the Access to Justice Account and the Criminal Justice Enhancement Account.
 
Please join me as a co-sponsor of legislation to simplify the administration of two surcharges collected by the Judicial Department that are used to fund the Access to Justice Account and the Criminal Justice Enhancement Account.

The Access to Justice Account funds civil legal assistance to poor and disadvantaged persons. The Criminal Justice Enhancement Account funds reimbursements to counties for a portion of full-time district attorneys’ salaries.

This legislation would move the two surcharges to the Judicial Code, which is where these two programs are established. No change to the fee amounts or the eligible uses would be included in this legislation.
