Subject: | Prohibiting Utility Reconnection Fees |
Utility costs are becoming a larger and larger portion of Pennsylvanians’ budgets. Families are struggling to pay for housing and utilities and are on the precipice of a financial disaster. As utility prices continue to rise, thousands of these individuals and their loved ones are at even higher risk for utility shut-offs in addition to costly reconnection fees. To address this issue, my legislation would prohibit utility companies and municipal authorities from requiring reconnection fees for individuals with incomes below a certain financial threshold who were disconnected due to lack of payment. Public utilities and municipal authorities would then be able to work with the individual to create a payment plan to bring any outstanding bills current. As legislators, we must ensure that our constituents are given every opportunity to thrive and protect their right to affordable and dependable living conditions. Please join me in co-sponsoring this commonsense legislation to keep our vulnerable Pennsylvanians from being forced even further into utility debt. |
