| Subject: | Making our Communities Safer by Easing Burdens on Borough Police Departments |
| Recently the mayor of a borough in my district approached me about an issue that is not only plaguing his borough but boroughs throughout the Commonwealth. The mayor indicated that under current law, boroughs who have three or more full time municipal police officers must do their full-time hiring through civil service commissions. This creates an additional cost burden on the borough as well as adding significant amounts of time to the process that other municipalities are not burdened with. Additionally, this process further limits a borough’s candidate pool at a time when many Municipal Police Departments are already having difficulty filling vacancies. Therefore, I am introducing legislation to amend the Borough Code to increase the cap that requires boroughs to hire police officers through civil service commission from three to ten officers. I believe that this simple change will relieve much of the burden on our small boroughs. Therefore, I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this crucial legislation to ensure that borough police departments have enough staff to protect residents. |
