| Subject: | Automated Speed Camera Pilot Program in School Zones |
| In November 2021, a thirteen-year-old child died after being struck by a vehicle while he used the crosswalk outside of his junior high school in Cheyenne, Wyoming. His tragic death, the result of careless driving, is sadly not uncommon. As public servants, it is incumbent upon us to protect Pennsylvania’s students and families from such devastating occurrences. One method of improving pedestrian safety is the use of automated traffic cameras. In 2020, our neighbors in New York expanded a pilot program for utilizing automated speed cameras in school zones. As part of Act 86 of 2018, Pennsylvania implemented speed cameras in active work zones across the state. I am introducing a bill modeled after Act 86 to establish a five-year pilot program for the use of automated speed cameras in school zones within the City of Philadelphia. With the help of automated speed cameras, school zone violations in New York City dropped substantially just months after the program commenced. We owe as much to the children of Pennsylvania. Please join me in supporting this proposal for a similar program in our state to make school zones safer for the students who use them every day. |
