Subject: | EOAs for Military Families |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to create Military Education Opportunity Accounts, a restricted-use educational savings account for students in military families. Our children deserve an education that best fits their individual needs. Unfortunately, high-quality school options are not always accessible for many Pennsylvania families. Military families, especially, face difficult circumstances: Frequent reassignments bring dramatic changes and an unpredictable education environment for students. A parent-controlled, state-administered account is the best means to ensure parents have the resources to meet their child’s educational needs wherever they are stationed. Under my bill, a child residing in Pennsylvania whose parent or guardian is on full-time active-duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, is a member of the National Guard and reserve on active duty, or was killed in the line of duty would be eligible for a Military Education Opportunity Account. The Military Education Opportunity Account would be administered by the Commonwealth, working with military families to fund educational needs of eligible students. The amount deposited in the account would be a percentage of the state’s per-pupil education subsidy. Military families would be able to use the money for a variety of approved educational needs, including: tuition, tutoring, online programs, therapy, curriculum, and textbooks. I appreciate your consideration of this bill, and I look forward to working with you to provide the best education options for the children of the men and women of our Armed Forces living in Pennsylvania. |
