Subject: Increasing Penalties for Unlicensed Carry of a Firearm

Gun violence is rising across this Commonwealth. As state lawmakers, we must do everything we can to stop this.

One thing we can do to stem the tide of gun violence is to increase penalties for repeat offenders who concealed carry a firearm without a license. Currently, individuals who are otherwise eligible for a concealed carry license can be charged with a misdemeanor if they are caught carrying a firearm without the license. Individuals can violate this law multiple times and still only be charged with misdemeanors.

Therefore, I will be introducing legislation to increase penalties for unlicensed concealed carry of a firearm. If an individual otherwise eligible for a license is charged two or more times for carrying a firearm without a license, they will be charged with a third-degree felony. If an individual who is ineligible to carry a firearm is charged two or more times with unlicensed carry of a firearm, they will be charged with a second-degree felony.

Please join me in supporting safe communities by supporting this legislation.

Introduced as HB1718
