| Subject: | Supporting our Teachers in the Remote Classroom |
| In an unbelievably short period of time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, school districts and teachers across the Commonwealth were forced to pivot on a dime and plunge headfirst into remote instruction. Despite the best efforts of many, technology and training gaps led to an uneven educational experience last spring, and, while improvements have been made this year, there is still much for our education profession to learn and be prepared for in the future. The reality is, no child is ready for school in PA without a computer and access to the Internet, and no teacher in PA is ready for school without the training and support needed for effective remote instruction. This bill would seek to integrate training related to remote instruction and online learning into teachers’ continuing professional education requirements as well as requiring all post-secondary teacher preparation programs to include coursework related to remote instruction and online learning in the prescribed curriculum. We must equip our school districts as well as our teachers (and paraprofessionals) with the necessary tools, pedagogy, and knowledge to be adaptable not only in times of emergency, but perhaps to provide a more inclusive learning environment that is better equipped to meet the individualized needs of our students across all ages. Please consider supporting this legislation to promote a more planned and targeted approach to shaping our classrooms around the advancements made in technology.
