MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 23, 2021 10:48 AM
From: Representative P. Michael Sturla
To: All House members
Subject: Requiring County Health Departments

As the COVID-19 pandemic has shown, governmental health departments are now more important than ever, especially with future pandemics being inevitable.

Currently, only six counties (Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Erie, Montgomery and Philadelphia) operate their own health departments. As a result, I plan to introduce legislation that would require all 67 counties to have their own health departments or create a regional health department with contiguous counties.

Local officials are best positioned to understand the needs and characteristics of their communities. Thus, it is critical that local officials utilize their expertise in their own health department to ensure the best health outcomes for their constituents.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.

Introduced as HB1441
