Subject: | Study on Nursing Homes |
Nursing homes provide care to thousands of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable and medically frail residents. When families are confronted with one of the most difficult and life-changing decisions as placing a loved one in a nursing home, they should be confident their family member will be free from harm. Unfortunately, despite repeated promises and assurances of improving care over the past few years, reports of inadequate management and neglect in nursing homes persist. Making an already dire situation worse, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on long-term care facilities throughout the state, with residents and staff bearing a disproportionately high burden for the disease. To ensure residents and their families are better protected from substandard care, I will be introducing a resolution that would direct the Joint State Government Commission to conduct a comprehensive study on how important factors, such as nurse staffing competency and ratios, emphasis on person-centered care, and the recruitment and retention of quality nursing home leaders, impact the health and safety of residents. Please join me in supporting this resolution that seeks to improve the quality of life and dignity of nursing home residents. Thank you for your consideration. |
