MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 24, 2020 10:52 AM
From: Representative Brian Sims
To: All House members
Subject: HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (September 18, 2020)

As of 2018, an estimated 1.2 million Americans aged 13 and older were living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Americans that are 55 and older have a greater chance of getting diagnosed with HIV late in the course of the disease, which means a later start to treatment and potentially more damage to the person’s immune system. Although there is a noted decline in the rate of new HIV infections in recent years due to the advancement of effective HIV treatments and advocacy, further education and resources are needed in the fight against this debilitating disease.

It is imperative that we as Pennsylvanians continue to make the effort to properly educate and generate awareness about a disease that has affected so many individuals in our nation. The more we work to encourage advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness, the better we can both protect ourselves and our families from infection and swiftly find a cure. As such, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 18, 2020, as “HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

As stewards of proper education and health practices for our citizens, it is my hope that you will join me in this collective effort to further spread awareness. Your consideration is highly appreciated.
