MEMORANDUM

Subject: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Every year, Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15 to honor the history, culture, and influence of past generations who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The celebration originated as a one-week observance in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded the celebration into a month-long event linked to the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.

Latinos are the largest ethnic minority group in the United States today, with approximately 975,000 residing in Pennsylvania. Therefore, Hispanic Heritage Month has become a vital opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural traditions and significant achievements of our Hispanic and Latino American communities across the Commonwealth.

As such, I will be introducing a resolution to designate September 15, 2020, to October 15, 2020, as “Hispanic Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania. I hope you will join me in celebrating Hispanic Americans and their incredible contributions to this Commonwealth.
