Every year, tobacco kills more than 480,000 people. As the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, more people lose their lives to tobacco than from AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. While major progress has been made in reducing the prevalence of smoking in adults, we must not ignore the fact that 1 in 13 children under the age of 18 will die prematurely because of tobacco use. Each day, roughly 2,000 children under the age of 18 will try smoking for the first time and more than 300 will become new regular daily smokers. To win the fight against tobacco, it is imperative that we prevent teens from starting to use tobacco products, support current tobacco users in kicking the habit, and protect all people from harmful secondhand smoke. By recognizing March 18, 2020, as “Kick Butts Day,” the Commonwealth can bring awareness to the dangers of smoking and show our strong commitment to tobacco-free communities. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution to help eliminate tobacco use in Pennsylvania. |
