| Subject: | Recognizing November 21, 2019, as the Great American Smokeout Day |
| Over 34 million Americans smoke cigarettes, which kill 480,000 Americans every year. Known to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and various cancers and lung diseases, tobacco use remains the most preventable cause of death in the United States. These products cost our society more than $300 billion every year, including more than $170 billion in direct health care costs and more than $156 billion in lost productivity. Every year, on the third Thursday of November, the American Cancer Society hosts the Great American Smokeout Day, which is used to encourage tobacco users to quit. This day also recognizes the health risks posed by tobacco products, and will be celebrated this year on November 21, 2019. It is in this spirit that I will be introducing a resolution recognizing that day as the Great American Smokeout Day in Pennsylvania. I hope you will join me in recognizing the threat tobacco use poses to an individual’s health and to our society, in encouraging current users to quit, and in supporting those individuals who are currently trying to quit.
