MEMORANDUM

Subject: Resolution Designating October 2019 as “Dyslexia Awareness Month”

Memorandum

TO: All Members of the House of Representatives

FROM: Representative Ed Neilson

DATE: May 20, 2019
SUBJECT: Resolution Designating October 2019 as “Dyslexia Awareness Month”
Developmental reading disorder, or dyslexia, is a language-based learning disability that affects the areas of the brain that support the interpretation of language. Symptoms of dyslexia include slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor writing or mixing up similar words. An estimated 15 to 20 percent of individuals in the United States have symptoms of dyslexia, but many go for years without a proper diagnosis. Students with dyslexia are likely to struggle with several aspects of academic learning, are at a higher risk of dropping out of school entirely and can experience a loss of self-esteem and general reading problems that may persist into adulthood. Students who receive early and correct diagnoses of this disorder can receive the appropriate teaching methods to ensure successful academic growth.
To draw attention to this often misunderstood language-based learning disability and the large percentage of residents in the Commonwealth who experience symptoms, my resolution will designate October 2019 as “Dyslexia Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. I invite all members to co-sponsor this important legislation as a significant step in ensuring that those affected by dyslexia can get the necessary support.
