Subject: | Expungement of Criminal Records - Marijuana |
Please join me in sponsoring legislation that will allow for the expungement of criminal records for those who turned to the use of marijuana for medical purposes before the enactment of the Medical Marijuana Act. I was contacted by a constituent who explained her own story of how PTSD, fueled by childhood abuse and other trauma, led her desperately to seek relief. Rather than resorting to narcotics to dull her pain, she found relief in marijuana. Although she only used the marijuana to ease her symptoms of PTSD, she now has a criminal record for possession of a small amount of marijuana. She now holds and uses a medical marijuana card and is flourishing with the help of that medicine. My legislation will provide a limited means for people like my constituent to expunge convictions for possession of a small amount of marijuana from their criminal records, provided that the conviction arose from the medical use of marijuana prior to enactment of the Medical Marijuana Act and that the person is now using medical marijuana under the provisions of that law without any other drug-related convictions. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation. |
