Subject: | Interscholastic Sports for Phys. Ed Requirement |
Currently, high school students who are in two or more varsity sports are also required to take physical education classes. These students are involved in strenuous activities that meet the intent of keeping students fit, active and developing a sense of sportsmanship and camaraderie which required Phys Ed courses are meant to foster. Because students who are involved in varsity sports are significantly more likely to be our higher academic achievers, they are more likely to be involved in Advanced Placement courses which require significantly more study time. For the above reasons I will be introducing a bill that will enable school board directors to permit students to satisfy the physical education requirements by their participation in an interscholastic sport. This may be utilized twice per school year for seasonal interscholastic sports. Students would be able to use the extra class time for either a study hall, to access the campus broadband and library facilities for their homework, or to take additional classwork which would benefit them in preparation for college. This would encourage both athletic and academic growth. Please join me in supporting our young athletic scholars. |
