Subject: | Resolution to Condemn the Growth of Anti-Semitism in the United States |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation which would reaffirm the support of the House of Representatives for Israel our only democratic ally in the Middle East. This resolution is in response to a disturbing rise of anti-Semitism in the west and in the United States. We saw the tragedy caused by the growth of anti-Semitism in Pennsylvania when a gunman filled with hate murdered 11 innocent people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill. In the following days, the New York Times reported an alarming statistic; half of all hate crimes in New York City were perpetrated against Jewish victims. This should generate not only alarm, but concern in the heart of every American. Equally troubling is the growing acceptance of the anti-Semitic political movement which advocates to boycott, divest and sanction (BDS) the State of Israel. This movement has falsely labeled the nation an apartheid state and advocates policies which would destabilize an American ally which is home to over 40% of the world’s Jewish population. Recognizing the damage such a movement could cause, the General Assembly passed Act 163 of 2016 which passed both chambers with only 10 no votes. Act 163 prevents state agencies from entering into purchasing contracts with a company which supports the BDS movement. Anti-Semitism has increased after Governor Wolf signed Act 163 into law. I believe it is time for the House of Representatives to reaffirm support for Israel and the members of the Jewish community living in Pennsylvania. Please co-sponsor this resolution to show solidarity with Jewish community in Pennsylvania and Israel by condemning anti-Semitism in all its forms. |
