Subject: | Designating March 13, 2019, as “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day” |
Research indicates that poor nutrition is an important factor behind the rise of obesity and related complications in this country. A report by the United States Department of Agriculture indicates that between 1970 and 2014, Americans ate on average almost 400 more calories per day. This increase was driven by a substantial rise in the amount of foods consumed that are high in added fats, oils, sugar, sweeteners and grains. Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts who play a crucial part in promoting good nutrition and food choices that make individuals healthy. Good nutrition is important to the growth and development of children and reduces the risk of developing health conditions such as obesity, heart disease and some cancers. As such, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing March 13, 2019, as “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day” to commemorate the work of RDNs in helping people make positive lifestyle changes. Their role in informing the public of healthy eating habits should not go unnoticed. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
