MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 17, 2018 01:59 PM
From: Representative Mary Jo Daley
To: All House members
Subject: School District Closings for Election Day

Current law provides for the use of public school buildings as polling places on Election Day. This presents a safety concern for school administrators who are tasked with having to coordinate the need for public access while simultaneously enuring students’ safety.

My legislation eliminates those safety and scheduling concerns and presents a unique advantage to students. Specifically, closing public schools gives students an opportunity to engage in the voting process via volunteerism as poll workers.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislative initiative which will ultimately improve the safety of our students, promote civic participation, and ease the logistical burden on school boards and polling place coordinators.

Introduced as HB1726
