Subject: | March 2018 as “Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month” |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating March 2018 as “Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. In fiscal year 2015/16, over 56,000 Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities received services and supports within the community and more than 89,000 children, including significant numbers of children who have intellectual disabilities, received early intervention services. In addition, 13,745 individuals with intellectual disabilities continue to wait for services. These services and supports ensure that all citizens of Pennsylvania who have intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in the range of life experiences we all enjoy in our homes and communities: inclusion in schools, neighborhoods, businesses and place of worship. Public awareness and education improve the community’s understanding of intellectual disabilities and the services and supports needed to meet the specific needs and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. I hope you consider joining me in support of this resolution. |
