Subject: | Resolution-Requiring Tracer fluids in Hydraulic Fracking Operations |
In the near future I plan to introduce legislation that would help determine who is responsible for water contamination incidents near gas drilling operations. My legislation would require operators of oil and gas wells to include a fluid tracer in their hydraulic fracturing operations. According to one analysis, the Department of Environmental Protection received more than 2,800 complaints of water problems in proximity to drilling operations. In most of those cases, the cause of the problem cannot be formally determined. My legislation would require anyone who does hydraulic fracturing treatment or provides chemicals directly to the operator for hydraulic fracturing shall include a tracer substance in the fluid that is used in the fracking operation. The legislation requires the Department of Environmental Protection to develop regulations to provide for the safe use of the tracer substance and the substance must be traceable to a specific operator who is fracking an unconventional well. Thank you for your consideration. |
