Subject: | Co-sponsorship: Recognizing May 2017 as “National Community Action Month” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing May 2017 as “National Community Action Month” in the Commonwealth. Community Action Agencies (CAAs) work in over 96 percent of the counties in America, assisting low-income citizens to rise out of poverty. Created under the federal Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, CAAs were established to assist low-income individuals and families in attaining self-sufficiency. Currently numbering near 1000, these agencies are uniquely designed to address the needs of locally targeted populations. Community action networks use local private-sector and low-income community representatives, working together to address the specific needs of individuals and families in their communities. Serving more than 16.2 million people via direct support, CAAs aid Americans who are most in need, with incomes below 75 percent of the federal poverty threshold. Programs such as Head Start, youth mentoring, literacy and adult basic education are just a few of the services provided through these community based agencies. I hope you will join me in recognizing the important work done by the CAAs here in Pennsylvania and across the nation. Please consider co-sponsoring this legislation.
