Subject: | Juneteenth Independence Day – June 19, 2017 |
Imminently, we will introduce legislation to commemorate June 19, 2017, as Juneteenth Independence Day in the Commonwealth. As many of you know, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in all regions of the United States. With this resolution, the General Assembly will recognize General Order No. 3 issued by Major General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, which proclaimed all slaves to be free and included absolute equality in personal rights. Resolutions have been introduced over the decades to recognize the importance of Juneteenth. Our legislation will provide for the designation of June 19, 2017, as Juneteenth Independence Day to commemorate and honor the resilience, courage, and determination of the enslaved, their descendants, and all Americans who embody Dr. King’s quote “None are free until all are free!” Please join us as a sponsor of this legislative proposal. |
