Subject: | Resolution Recognizing May 29, 2017, as 529 College Savings Day |
In the near future I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing May 29, 2017 as 529 College Savings Day in Pennsylvania. Across the country, college savings programs annually recognize the date “5/29” as an opportunity to bring awareness to 529 plans. 529 College Savings Day serves to increase public understanding and appreciation of the value of saving for attendance at institutions of higher education through the PA 529 College Savings Program. Recent data show that Pennsylvania graduates in the class of 2015 have an average student loan debt of $34,798 per student. It is therefore vital that we promote the Commonwealth’s 529 College Savings Program. This program achieves its goal of assisting Pennsylvanians with the ability to obtain higher education without relying on overwhelming debt by offering two distinct plans - the Pennsylvania 529 Guaranteed Savings Plan and the Pennsylvania 529 Investment Plan. Since its inception, the Pa 529 College Savings Program has assisted more than 88,000 students who have used more than $2.4 billion in savings to pay for higher education. I hope that you will join me in bringing recognition to the PA 529 College Savings Program by co-sponsoring this resolution. |
