Subject: | Sex Education and Affirmative Sexual Consent |
In the near future, we plan to introduce legislation that would require age-appropriate sexual health education at schools across our Commonwealth, including concepts such as “good touch” and “bad touch” to be taught at the elementary level, and require affirmative sexual consent as part of the required sexual violence awareness educational program at institutions of higher education. Research has shown that highly effective sex education programs reduce the incidence of unprotected sex, frequency of sex, and number of partners, lowering sexually transmitted infection (STI) and pregnancy rates. By requiring these programs in our schools, students across the state are better able to make informed and intelligent choices regarding their personal lives. Additionally, incorporating affirmative sexual consent into educational programs at institutions of higher education can lower the incidences of sexual assault on campus. Please join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
