Subject: | Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Training for Cosmetologists, Nail Technicians, Estheticians, and Natural Hair Braiders |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would require cosmetologists, nail technicians, esthetician and hair braiders to complete one hour of domestic violence and sexual assault training in order to be issued a new license, or complete a license renewal. I was inspired about introducing this bill after reading about a similar law in Illinois. It is not uncommon for men and women to confide in their cosmetologist, nail technician, esthetician or natural hair braider. This, on some occasions, could mean sharing personal information such as domestic violence or sexual assault. Currently, there is no official procedure or response for these professionals. They might not have the skill set to deal with these tragic or potentially life or death situations. My legislation will provide cosmetologists, nail technicians, estheticians and natural hair braiders with the resources needed to properly handle these sensitive circumstances. My legislation amends the Act of May 3, 1933, known as the Cosmetology Law, to require cosmetologists, nail technicians, estheticians and natural hair braiders to complete a one-hour training in domestic violence and sexual assault awareness as approved by the State Board of Cosmetology. This requirement must be completed prior to being issued a new license or renewing a license. Colleagues, please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
