MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 9, 2016 09:42 AM
From: Representative Dan Frankel and Rep. John Maher
To: All House members
Subject: Designating March 22, 2016 as “Pitt Day in Harrisburg”

In the very near future, we will be introducing a resolution designating March 22, 2016 as “Pitt Day in Harrisburg.”

The University of Pittsburgh was founded in 1787 and is currently home to approximately 25,000 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students – making it one of the largest institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Pitt, a state-related institution for fifty years, continues to advance in its mission as a leader in education, a pioneer in research, and a partner with the Commonwealth in economic development. The university employs more than 13,000 Pennsylvania residents at its main campus and satellite campuses, generating millions in tax revenue to our state and local communities. The University of Pittsburgh’s direct and indirect economic impact on the entire state of Pennsylvania amounts to billions of dollars each and every year. Truly remarkable figures.

Not only does the University of Pittsburgh have a tremendous economic impact on the Commonwealth, it also remains an incredible value for our residents. For the 11th consecutive year, Kiplinger's Personal Finance ranks Pitt ranks as the top value among all public colleges and universities in Pennsylvania. Pitt also was the only Pennsylvania public college or university included in The Princeton Review-USA TODAY national "Best Value Colleges for 2014" list, based on academic quality, cost, and financial aid. It is of little surprise that total applications to the school have increased by more than 10 percent over the past two years – attracting students from across the United States and around the globe.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of “Pitt Day in Harrisburg,” giving members of the General Assembly an opportunity to talk with alumni, faculty, and students about their work and to gain a first-hand perspective of the challenges currently facing public higher education. Alumni and friends annually travel to Harrisburg in order to meet with elected officials and to advocate on behalf of the University. “Pitt Day in Harrisburg” is a daylong celebration of Pitt and its accomplishments. It is regularly enjoyed by members of the Administration, General Assembly, their staff, along with alumni and friends of the University.

The University of Pittsburgh has been a pillar in the Commonwealth’s higher educational system since its founding. As such, please join us in designating March 22, 2016 as “Pitt Day in Harrisburg” and recognize the remarkable impact this institution continues to have on Western Pennsylvania and the entire Commonwealth as a whole.
