Subject: | Commemorating the Birth of George Washington |
I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the birth of our first President George Washington. Washington played an integral part in our nation's history from the Revolutionary War to his presidency. He was the first commander of the Continental Army and commissioned six privately owned schooners to begin Washington's Secret Navy, the precursor to today's Navy. His ships bore the Appeal to Heaven flag, a white flag with a green pine tree stitched onto it. This flag represented the colonist's trust in God to save them from tyranny. George Washington was elected our first President in 1789 and during his presidency he developed many of the administrative features that are part of the elected office today. Please join me in commemorating the birth of George Washington, an individual that had many contributions to our nation. |
