MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 1, 2015 11:30 AM
From: Representative Brad Roae
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating November 3, 2015 as “Color the World Orange Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution to declare the date of November 3rd, 2015 as “Color the World Orange Day” to bring awareness to Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). RSD is a rare disorder of the sympathetic nervous system that is characterized by chronic and severe pain.

RSD usually affects one of the extremities of the body although pain may spread to a wider area. The primary symptom of RSD is intense, continuous pain with other symptoms including burning pain, increased skin sensitivity, changes in skin temperature, skin color or skin texture, changes in nail and hair growth patterns, stiffness and swelling in affected joints and the decreased ability to move the affected extremity or coordinate muscle movement.

Numerous triggers for RSD exist including injury or trauma, surgery, degenerative arthritis of the neck, shoulder problems, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, infection, brain diseases, thyroid disorders, carpal tunnel, shingles and certain medications, although in an estimated one-third of patients with RSD, there is no associated trigger.

It is believed that millions of Americans may experience the debilitating symptoms of RSD. Public awareness of RSD can be furthered through the recognition of “Color the World Orange Day”, when individuals are encouraged to wear orange and post pictures to social media, as well as plan events and activities in their communities.

I would greatly appreciate your support of this resolution. Thank you for your consideration.
