Subject: Resolution Designating April 2015 as Alcohol Awareness Month

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating April 2015 as “Alcohol Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Alcohol use by our Commonwealth’s youth is extremely dangerous, not only to themselves but also to society. Underage drinking is directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, educational failure, alcohol overdose and other problem behaviors. Adolescence is a time of heightened risk taking and our youth may not fully comprehend the consequences of drinking alcohol. It is with this in mind that we need to raise awareness about alcohol abuse and take action to educate and prevent it, both at home and in the community. We have a responsibility to minors to provide them with alternative opportunities and education to ensure no youth has access to alcohol.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution and to stand together with community organizations, business leaders, government agencies and our partners in the alcohol industry to raise awareness about alcohol and the effects it can have on our society when abused.

Thank you.
