| Subject: | Resolution Honoring Representative Rosita Youngblood |
| In observance of Black History Month, I plan to introduce a resolution that honors Representative Rosita Youngblood for becoming the first African-American female to hold a leadership position in the history of the General Assembly. A 1985 graduate of Antioch University, Representative Youngblood was first elected to represent the 198th Legislative District of the House of Representatives in a special election on April 19, 1994. As a former community advocate and legislative aide in Philadelphia, Representative Youngblood brought a powerful combination of passion and knowledge to the General Assembly. Since taking office, her dedication to improving the lives of not only her constituents, but also of women and minority groups throughout Pennsylvania has created a shining example to strive toward. This dedication is clear through her work with organizations such as the National Foundation of Women Legislators, Women for Women, the Lucien Crump Educational Foundation, Creative Urban Education Systems, the Philadelphia Political Congress of African American Women, 2000 African American Women, and Friends of Fernhill Park. Her service reached a milestone on November 12, 2014, when after her election to an 11th term, Representative Rosita Youngblood was elected by the members of the House Democratic Caucus to serve as the Democratic Caucus Secretary, becoming the first African-American female to hold a leadership position in the history of the General Assembly. As the nation celebrates the historic accomplishments of the African-American community this month, please join me in honoring this achievement by our friend and colleague, Representative Rosita Youngblood. |
