Subject: | Resolution Honoring Tony Auth |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the life of Pulitzer prize-winning cartoonist Tony Auth. For 41 years, William Anthony “Tony” Auth, Jr. was the backbone of the editorial page of the Philadelphia Inquirer, using his wit to render thousands of cartoons stimulating discussion on current political and cultural tides. Mr. Auth’s drawings were based on subjects ranging from Philadelphia politics, world affairs and national issues to sports and whimsy. His work garnered the attention of a national audience via syndication. Known for his insight, perspective and tireless information gathering, Mr. Auth provided great value to the editorial board of the Inquirer promoting ideas derived from his great humanity and compassion as a voice for the powerless. Although under a grueling schedule, producing five cartoons a week, Mr. Auth always took the time to mentor up-and-coming artists, one of whom went on to become a Pulitzer-prize winner. Sadly, on September 14, 2014, Mr. Auth passed away at the age of 72 leaving behind his family, a distinguished career and a legion of dedicated fans. His drawings and the life he lived will always be remembered. Please join me in honoring the life and legacy of a man who made it his lifelong task to arouse discussion on important issues with his witty and thought provoking cartoons. |
