Subject: | Mercy Day - September 24, 2014 |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 24th, 2014 as “Mercy Day” in Pennsylvania. Worldwide, the Sisters of Mercy celebrate “Mercy Day” on September 24th to recognize the day in 1827 on which their foundress, Catherine McAuley, an Irish Catholic laywoman, opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin as a school for the education of poor young girls and as a residence for homeless girls and women. During her lifetime, Catherine would go on to establish 14 independent foundations dedicated to the needs of the poor, especially women and children, as well as the congregation of the Sisters of Mercy. In the United States, the first Sisters of Mercy arrived from Ireland in 1843 at the invitation of the Bishop of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and by 1854, sisters began to settle in New York City, Chicago, Illinois, Little Rock, Arkansas, and San Francisco, California, in order to establish schools for both children and adults and hospitals to serve the needy. Today, the Sisters of Mercy continue the ministry of Catherine McAuley by providing education to students in elementary and secondary schools located in 20 states in the continental United States, one territory, and five countries, as well as to students attending institutions of higher education recognized for their quality throughout the United States and the world. I hope that you will join me in by co-sponsoring this legislation. Thank you for your consideration. |
