MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Recognizing the 50th Anniversary of the Port Authority of Allegheny County

In the near future, as chairman of the Allegheny Delegation, I intend to introduce legislation that would recognize the 50th anniversary of the Port Authority of Allegheny County.

Pittsburgh and Allegheny County have a rich history of public transportation dating back over 150 years. As recently as the 1960s, Pittsburgh held the distinction of being home to the largest streetcar system in the country. It is also the home of two iconic funiculars – the Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines, the latter of which is the oldest, continuously operated in the country.

Following the post-World War II economic boom and the rise of the automobile, the reduced ridership put pressure on the already struggling myriad of rail companies. Recognizing the importance of public transportation, the citizens of Allegheny County joined together and their actions culminated in the Port Authority of Allegheny County beginning its work as an authority on March 1, 1964. Since then, the disparate group of transportation companies has been combined, improving efficiency, and under the Port Authority’s leadership, the various transportation systems have been expanded into neighboring counties with continuously upgraded and improved services that have been bringing together the region for half a century.

Please join me in supporting this legislation recognizing the great contributions of the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
