Subject: Resolution Honoring Civil Rights Activist Thelma Lovette and Extending Condolences to her Family

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that honors the public service contributions and civil rights activism of Thelma Lovette and extends condolences to her family.

Ms. Lovette passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the age of 98. A beloved member of her community, Ms. Lovette was the first African-American social worker at Pittsburgh’s Mercy Hospital, where she retired 15 years later as the supervisor of social workers. She also served on the Pittsburgh Planning Commission, the board of the Hill Community Development Corporation, and was the first woman to serve on the local YMCA’s Board of Management. In addition, for 35 years, Ms. Lovette served as a Democratic Committeewoman.

In addition to her community service, Ms. Lovette was a Civil Right activist who organized marches and events in Pittsburgh, and participated in the 1963 March on Washington. For her efforts, Ms. Lovette was given the honor of running as an Olympic torchbearer during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Ms. Thelma Lovette was greatly loved and revered by the residents of the Hill District and by the city of Pittsburgh. She was honored for her hard work and dedication to her community in 2012 with the newly opened Thelma Lovette YMCA being named in her honor.

Please join me in honoring the life and legacy of Ms. Thelma Lovette, as well as extending our condolences to her family.
