| Subject: | Condolence Resolution for Dr. Maya Angelou |
| In the near future, I plan to introduce a condolence resolution honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou, an internationally known poet, performer, educator, and civil rights activist. Befitting her enduring mission to withstand the adversity she faced early in life, Dr. Angelou wrote, “You may write me down in history/With your bitter, twisted lies, and Still I Rise. . . . You may trod me in the very dirt/But still, like dust, I'll rise.” A national icon, Dr. Angelou overcame great personal tragedy to excel in many disciplines and become a global advocate for women’s and civil rights. She was an award-winning poet and author, best known for her Pulitzer Prize nominated book of poetry entitled Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie and best-selling autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Dr. Angelou’s influence crossed international boarders when she relocated to Egypt and Ghana to cover cultural, political, and civil issues as a freelance journalist. She later served on presidential committees for Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Dr. Angelou also received the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barak Obama. On May 28, 2014, Dr. Angelou passed away at the age of 86. She will be forever remembered as an unwavering advocate and a fervent voice of the people. Please join me in honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Maya Angelou. |
