Subject: | Resolution designating June 2014 as “Dairy Month” and “Dairy Farmers Appreciation Month” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future I will be introducing a resolution designating June 2014 as “Dairy Month” and “Dairy Farmers Appreciation Month” in Pennsylvania. The resolution will specifically honor the economic driving force of dairy production and the hard work and achievements of dairy farmers and their families within the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania has 7,000 dairy businesses, both large and small, with about 540,000 cows that produce nearly 11 billion pounds of milk that amounts to 1.2 billion gallons each year. Agriculture serves as the largest industry in the state with dairy serving as the largest segment of that industry. In fact, Pennsylvania dairy farmers produce more than 5 percent of the national’s total milk supply annually, ranking fifth in the nation, and contributing about $2.3 billion to the state’s economy. Interestingly, Dairy farming remains a proud family tradition in Pennsylvania in which nearly all dairy farms in the Commonwealth remain family owned and dependent on family labor. The resolution will recognize the outstanding contributions of Pennsylvania's dairy farmers to the historical, cultural, environmental and economic and health success of this Commonwealth. It also will honor, appreciate and praise the many contributions that Dairy Farmers, and their families and all those involved in the industry make regularly to improve life for all in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I hope you will join with me in cosponsoring and supporting this resolution. |
