Subject: | May 2014 as Cancer Caregivers Recognition Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating May 2014 as Cancer Caregivers Recognition Month in Pennsylvania and honoring the vital role caregivers play in the lives of cancer patients. The American Cancer Society estimates that 79,920 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Pennsylvania in 2014 and many cancer patients will require support from unpaid caregivers. Known as family caregivers or lay caregivers, unpaid caregivers are primarily a spouse, partner or adult child. Close friends, co-workers and neighbors often fill this role when family is not nearby. Caregivers are an important part of the health care team and provide a complex array of support tasks that extend across physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional domains. While caring for an individual with cancer can be very stressful and exhausting, requiring emotional, spiritual and physical strength; many caregivers find satisfaction in providing care for a loved one with cancer. Many cancer patients are deeply grateful to their caregivers for their love and dedication, weathering the challenges and setbacks of cancer treatment and sharing the triumphs with them. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
