MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 27, 2014 04:24 PM
From: Representative Joseph F. Markosek
To: All House members
Subject: Commemorating the 35th Anniversary of the Accident at Three Mile Island

Next week, I plan to introduce a resolution commemorating the 35th anniversary of the most critical nuclear power plant mishap in the United States—the accident which occurred at Three Mile Island Unit 2 on March 28, 1979. While no injuries, fatalities, cancer or disease resulted from this incident, clean-up efforts of emergency responders and over 1,000 skilled workers were on-going for more than 14 years, costing nearly $1 billion. As an employee of Westinghouse during the time of this accident, I was involved in the clean-up and took pride in the contributions of everyone who worked tirelessly to restore the safety and security of Unit 2. Not only do the valiant efforts of these men and women merit recognition, but also, we must acknowledge the historical significance and important contributions of nuclear energy in this Commonwealth.

Today, sweeping changes and technology have enabled remarkable improvements to be achieved in the safety and efficiency of the currently operating Three Mile Island Unit 1, making this power plant an invaluable resource within the state. As the country shifts toward a green economy, it is essential that Pennsylvania play a leading role in the development of clean, efficient and green energy, both for our citizens and economy. This will enable us to attain energy independence, while creating thousands of high-paying jobs. Nuclear energy is, and must remain, an integral component of this equation.

The following were cosponsors of the 30th anniversary resolution in 2009: Hickernell, Buxton, Adolph, Beyer, Brennan, Burns, D. Costa, P. Costa, Creighton, Denlinger, DeWeese, DiGirolamo, Fleck, Geist, George, Grove, Helm, Hess, Kortz, Levdansky, Marshall, McCall, McGeehan, McIlvaine Smith, Melio, Mensch, Millard, Moul, Mustio, M. O’Brien, Pallone, Pashinski, Payne, Quigley, Quinn, Readshaw, Reichley, Sainato, Santoni, Saylor, Scavello, Siptroth, K. Smith, Solobay, Staback, Swanger, R. Taylor, Turzai, Vulakovich, Walko, White and Boyd.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
