Subject: | National Hunting and Fishing Day in Pennsylvania Resolution |
Later this week, I will introduce a resolution recognizing September 28, 2013 as “National Hunting and Fishing Day in Pennsylvania.” National Hunting and Fishing Day got its start in the Commonwealth in 1970. At that time, Ira Joffe of Upper Darby, owner and operator of Joffe’s Gun Shop, stood among many the sportsmen and women who felt discouraged by the lack of knowledge among many people of the importance sportsmen and women played in the environmental conservation movement. These sportsmen and women spurred on efforts to conserve wildlife and the natural lands within our country so hunters, hikers, campers and all of us could enjoy nature’s beauty. Mr. Joffe used this sentiment to persuade Governor Raymond Shaffer to proclaim the first Outdoor Sportsman’s Day. Mr. Joffe’s efforts spread nationwide and prompted the National Shooting Sports Foundation to request the introduction of a National Hunting and Fishing Day Resolution, which U.S. Rep. Bob Sikes of Florida sponsored. Rep. Sikes’ work led President Richard Nixon to sign the first proclamation of National Hunting and Fishing Day on May 2, 1972. Later that year, 50 governors and 600 mayors nationwide had signed similar proclamations to honor the efforts of sportsmen and women to protect and enhance our natural resources. This resolution will continue the effort to inform the public of how those who hunt and fish led the way to the conservation of fish, wildlife and other natural resources for everyone and will honor them for that work. It also will urge all Pennsylvanians to participate in activities associated with the day. I hope you will join with me in providing this honor by cosponsoring this resolution.
