Subject: | Co-sponsorship: Resolution Honoring the Life and Legacy of Former Representative Lois DeBerry |
When the House chamber reconvenes on Monday, September 23, 2013, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing and honoring the life and contributions of former Representative Lois DeBerry, who prior to succumbing to her ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday, July 28, 2013, was the longest serving member of the Tennessee House of Representatives. As many of you are aware, throughout the course of her illustrious tenure with the Tennessee Legislature, the Honorable Lois DeBerry served as one of the state’s most powerful political leaders. Known as a political maverick, former Representative DeBerry was also an adept communicator, which served as a boon for both her and the citizens of Tennessee in the way of forging much needed compromise and the creation of common-sense public policy. Additionally, former Representative DeBerry was the personification of a community servant, as evidenced by her repeated though gracious refusals to accept and seek higher office. Although it is safe to say that former Representative DeBerry has imparted innumerable life and political lessons upon many of us, the one lesson that should resonate with us all is that in our respective journeys to change the world we must first begin with the initial step. The initial step taken by Representative DeBerry was instrumental in revolutionizing the political culture and dynamics of Tennessee politics. However, I have no doubt that the innumerable individuals whom she has positively impacted and influenced will make every attempt to complete the journey on her behalf, myself included. As such, it is today that I wish to take this opportunity to appeal to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to please join me in recognizing and honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of former Representative Lois DeBerry. If you should have any questions or concerns regarding this measure, please contact Brandon J. Flood at (717) 772-6955 or BFlood@pahouse.net. |
