MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 27, 2013 08:12 AM
From: Representative Ryan A. Bizzarro
To: All House members
Subject: September 2013 as “Light the Night Walk Month” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating September 2013 as “Light the Night Walk Month” in Pennsylvania.

Since the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was founded in 1949, it has been funding research to find effective treatments for blood cancer patients. Through their fund raising and outreach efforts, LLS has helped hundreds of thousands of patients with many types of blood cancers. Forty years ago, there was only a 3% chance of surviving childhood leukemia. Today, 90% of children with leukemia survive.

Each year the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helps organize Light the Night Walks throughout the United States and Canada. The purpose of these events is to raise blood cancer awareness and to gather donations in order to fund lifesaving cancer research, provide support services to patients and their families, and offer financial assistance to cover patient expenses. Prior to the walks, friends, families, supporters, and co-workers form fundraising teams, and millions of consumers aid LLS’ efforts by donating at retail outlets throughout the United States. All of these efforts culminate in inspirational, memorable evening walks in nearly 200 communities each fall across North America.

This year, Pennsylvania communities will hold Light the Night Walks in Erie, Scranton, Uniontown, West Chester, Pittsburgh, Johnstown, Lancaster, Allentown, Harrisburg, Newtown, York and Philadelphia. I believe it is imperative that we lend our support and encouragement as Pennsylvanians raise awareness of blood cancers and gather donations to support research efforts and patients’ needs.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
