Subject: | Resolution Commemorating the 225th Anniversary of Moon Township, Allegheny County |
Next week I will introduce a Resolution commemorating the 225th Anniversary of the establishment of Moon Township, Allegheny County. Moon Township is the oldest township in Allegheny County. The Township was founded in 1788 and consisted of 143 square miles. The Township’s initial settlement was the direct result of the westward expansion of English settlers and traders who arrived in the Ohio Valley in the early to mid-18th century. As the 18th century drew to close, pioneers settled the area to develop the fertile plots of land suitable for farming. In the 20th Century, the Township experienced significant economic growth as roadways and railroads opened the area for industry. During World War II, many industrial plants located within the Moon Township area, which created a need for housing. In 1952, the greater Pittsburgh Airport opened for business, followed by the construction of the Greater Pittsburgh Airport, later named the Pittsburgh International Airport. Today, Moon Township is home to national corporations such as FedEx Ground, GlaxoSmithKline, Eaton Electrical Group and Michael Baker Corporation. Moon has been honored in the past as one of the Country’s best places to live. BusinessWeek.com also ranked Moon one of five best affordable suburbs in the Northeast. Thank you in advance for joining me in recognizing the elected officials and residents of Moon Township as they celebrate the dedication and hard work of all, past and present, who strive to make Moon Township one of the best places in the country to live. /jmm |
