MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 5, 2013 03:40 PM
From: Representative Thomas R. Caltagirone
To: All House members
Subject: Study of Consolidation of Municipal Police Departments

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution directing the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee or the Joint State Government Commission to conduct a study concerning the consolidation of municipal police departments in the Commonwealth.

There are currently 1,124 municipal police departments throughout the Commonwealth. This number is unsustainable and in this time of fiscal uncertainty, the legislature must take the lead in providing local governments with the tools necessary to reduce costs while still maintaining adequate public safety.

The study will include an analysis of the current funding, recommendations on how to improve the allocation of funding and recommendations concerning municipal police departments that are best suited for consolidation or merger. The report will be due December 30, 2013.
