MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 3, 2024 02:21 PM
From: Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill
To: All Senate members
Subject: Recognizing April 19, 2024 as Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Awareness Day

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 19, 2024 as Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Day in Pennsylvania.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s diaphragm fails to fully form, allowing abdominal organs to enter the chest cavity and preventing lung growth. Since 2000, it’s estimated that more than 700,000 babies have been born with CDH. Every year, 1,6000 babies are born with this condition in the United States. The overall survival rate is fifty percent, and the cause is unknown.

Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia is as common as Spina Bifida and Cystic Fibrosis, but very few people know about it.

Founded in 1995, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia International is a global non-profit working to support families while raising awareness and funding for conducting CDH research. Recognizing CDH Day in Pennsylvania will educate and connect families affected by this condition.

Please join me in co-sponsoring and recognizing Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Day in PA.
