Subject: Resolution Designating “Transgender Day of Remembrance” and “Transgender Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania
 
Soon, we plan to introduce a resolution designating November 20, 2023 as “Transgender Day of Remembrance” and November 13-19, 2023 as “Transgender Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania.

SisTers PGH describes Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) as a day where trans people gather worldwide to remember those lost to violence in the past year.

Since 2013, the Human Rights Campaign has tracked incidents of fatal transgender violence -- the same year the Federal Bureau of Investigation began reporting on hate crimes motivated by anti-transgender bias— and providing action items that can help end the violence. In 2023, at least 25 transgender and gender non-conforming people have had their lives taken tragically through violent means, including gun and interpersonal violence. 88% of victims were people of color, 52% were Black transgender women, 72% were killed with a gun, and 48% were misgendered or deadnamed by authorities or the press.

Transgender Awareness Week proceeds Transgender Day of Remembrance and is described by GLAAD as a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.

This resolution is intended to celebrate the joy, beauty, and lives of transgender people, while also elevating the continued need for legislative action so that Pennsylvania can be a place where all trans people are safe, healthy, and thriving.
