MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 25, 2023 02:23 PM
From: Senator Christine M. Tartaglione
To: All Senate members
Subject: National Disability Employment Awareness Month

In honor of the achievements of America’s workers with disabilities past and present, I will soon introduce a resolution that recognizes October 2023 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

October 2023 marks the 78th Anniversary National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Millions of Americans live with disabilities each day, many others will become disabled at some point in their lives. More than 30 years after the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), these individuals with disabilities, including numerous veterans, continue to make immeasurable contributions to the workforce.

Furthermore, this October marks the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973’s enactment which enshrined equal opportunity for people with disabilities into law by prohibiting discrimination in programs conducted by federal agencies, federal financial assistance programs, and federal employment. The theme for this year’s NDEAM has been designated as “Advancing Access and Equity” by the national Office of Disability Employment Policy. Therefore, in addition to celebrating the progress made by landmark legislation such as the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act, we must also look forward and strive to expand supportive and inclusive policies that benefit employees and employers alike.

By designating October 2023 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we encourage all Pennsylvanians to recognize the important contributions of Pennsylvanians with disabilities and encourage all citizens to ensure such individuals are afforded equal opportunities in the workplace.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
