Subject: | Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of May 2023 as “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month” in Pennsylvania. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has been observed in May nationally since 1992 to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843. Furthermore, on May 10, 1869, the first transcontinental railroad was completed with the aid of 15,000 to 20,000 Chinese immigrants, whose labor was vital in paving the way to the American West. Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have made invaluable contributions that have enriched our nation’s culture and society. According to a statement by the White House, “The American story as we know it would be impossible without the strength, contributions, and legacies of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have helped build and unite this country in each successive generation.” Moreover, the resilience, courage, and determination of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have been and continue to be integral in American history. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to honor the accomplishments and acknowledge the adversity faced by the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the past and the present. |
